A “Mermaid Princess Amelia and the Lost Symphony” Fanfiction:

“Utau’s Secret Duty”

Amida quickly hid behind some pink-colored sea anemone. She peeped through the hole between it and another sea plant that she didn’t know of, and watched Utau swim into the palace.

She scanned the environment and quickly followed. She looked over her shoulders, hoping nobody saw her…

Her fiancé had been acting funny for a while, and she was determined to find out what caused the change in his behavior.

Unfortunately, the door got locked after he closed it. She swam upward to the window sill so she could get a better view of the inside. It was a small house made of yellowish coral concrete with a sea grass roof.

Utau rarely visited the middle ring area in Atanga, and Amida had wondered why he had visited this particular house four times that week. Was he cheating on her? Was there another girl apart from her? Inside was dark, and she couldn’t see well, but she could hear whispers floating in the air. Utau was in the house with someone!

She swam to the back of the house and peeped through the window. She saw the back view of Utau sitting at a table, but she couldn’t tell who he was talking to.

She clenched her fists and tried to fight back the tears in her eyes. She tilted her head now and tried to catch an echo of their conversations, but all she got was nothing. Her mind was swarmed with several ugly scenarios, and she tried to push those thoughts away. If she caught him being unfaiothful, she would break up with him and move on with her life. There are others out there who could like me, she thought, trying to give herself courage.

Eventually, she swam in through another window, which was open and swam across the house’s corridor, eventually entering the main room. She moved closer to the table, her heart poundoing heavily. If she was careful, she could spy on Utau and his interlocutor, without them noticing.

“Are you sure about what you said?” a husky voice asked.

Amida’s forehead creased. A lady’s voice couldn’t sound like that.

“I’m positive. General Aalona hasn’t been up to anything. At least, not based on what I have gathered,” Utau said.

“I see… No matter what, I don’t trust her. I strongly feel she’s planning a coup with some of our enemies from abroad.”

“I haven’t seen her with any suspicious person. And she hasn’t been going out these days.”

“Why’s that?” the voice said, suddenly sounding familiar to her… almost too familiar. Amida leaned forward a little bit, and caught a glimpse of someone’s face. It was General Asvald. She heaved a sigh of relief, but then, a new form of curiosity consumed her. Why were they having a secret meeting?

Was Utau actually a spy?

“I’m yet to find out what she’s doing in her chamber, general.”

“Alright. Please find out and report to me as soon as possible!”

“Yes, general!”

“Did anyone follow you here?”

“No, general.”

“Good. I’ll leave first, and then, you follow…”

Amida quickly turned around and swam out of the house through the same window. She didn’t care what business they had together, but she was glad he wasn’t cheating. This mattered most!
